Rider Training – Level 2
First Time Out on Circuit
This programme is designed for riders who are ready to take their first steps onto the circuit.
The focus of Level 2 training is on building confidence, improving bike control, and
developing the essential skills required for safe and effective riding on track.
Riders must bring their own motorcycle. However, rental of the
SAMRA 250s may be arranged for those who do not have a suitable bike available.
Throughout the day, riders will progress through a series of guided sessions,
each focusing on a key aspect of riding technique and track awareness.
Session 1 – Learning the Circuit (“Look Through”)
The first session focuses on learning the circuit and understanding the importance
of vision while riding.
A key principle riders will learn is “where you look is where you go.”
Riders will practice looking through corners and focusing on the exit point rather
than looking down at the bike or the front wheel.
It is normal to feel nervous when riding on track for the first time. Riders will be
encouraged to approach corners calmly, slow down before entering the turn, take a breath,
and turn their head to look through the corner toward the exit.
Session 2 – Braking and Corner Entry
This session focuses on understanding how to approach and ride through corners safely
and smoothly.
Brake → Turn → Gas
These actions should never be performed all at once.
- Identifying braking markers
- Braking while the bike is upright
- Releasing the brake before leaning into the corner
- Turning in smoothly while maintaining correct vision
- Understanding the apex of the corner
- Accelerating smoothly out of the corner
Riders will also learn when to shift down to a lower gear when entering tighter corners.
Session 3 – Body Position
Correct body position plays a major role in maintaining balance and control on the motorcycle.
- Head – Always facing the direction you are looking.
- Arms – Slightly bent, relaxed, and not gripping the handlebars tightly.
- Chest – Turned toward the direction of travel.
- Feet – Positioned on the balls of the feet, allowing for smooth gear changes.
Session 4 – Building Bike Control
This session focuses on developing confidence while controlling the motorcycle at low speeds.
If the skid pan is available, riders will move there to practice basic cone
exercises designed to improve steering, control, and balance.
If the skid pan is not available, riders will use RSR off-road bikes on the
grass behind the back pit area to practice similar control techniques.
Session 5 – On-Track Practice
In the final session, riders return to the circuit to apply everything they have learned
throughout the day.
This practice session allows riders to focus on vision, cornering lines, smooth braking,
body position, and building confidence while controlling the motorcycle on track.
By the end of the programme, riders will have a much stronger understanding of how to
approach and ride safely on the circuit while building the confidence needed to continue
developing their riding skills.
